Almost two decades ago, Hannah Hauxwell, a totally obscure one-woman farmer living a life of cruel deprivation on a half-abandoned Pennine Dale, emerged from a howling blizzard, dressed in rags and dragging a cow behind her, into the now legendary documentary called Too Long a Winter, made for Yorkshire Television and the ITV network by Barry Cockcroft.

That film, which told the story of Hannah’s lone struggle to survive on a pitifully small income in a desolate and near-deserted corner of the high Pennines, with no electricity and no running water, went on to win many awards around the world and made Hannah an international celebrity.

Since then there have been two further documentaries, and books. The No. 1 bestseller, Seasons of My Life, recounts Hannah’s life at Low Birk Hatt farm. It is a moving and colourful story of patient acceptance, the story of a determined woman who, despite their toll on her health and well-being, was loath to give up her beloved home and animals.

But Hannah was finally persuaded to exchange her life of toil on the farm for a comfortable retirement in Belle Vue Cottage in the nearby village of Cotherstone. Daughter of the Dales tells how she is coping with her new life, about her travels around the country and her meetings with fellow celebrities and the clamouring public. She also opens a new door to her past life, including the previously untold and fascinating, if painful, story of the childhood and courtship of her mother and father.
