The second hilarious story can be read without having read the first ("There are Ants in my Sugar".)  May and Annica run into brand new crises (a simmering forbidden, interracial love affair, murderous criminals). Annica has to try and save her own faltering marriage through supernatural means (the "witch doctor"), but also has to deal with the roof blowing off in one of those notorious summer storms - while Garth is, of course, away - again. And when he does come back, and his own business has failed, wants to take over hers! The heroine of the veld is at her wits end. Ben suddenly makes a play for her ... to which May warns of “groot kak” (big trouble)... The climax is fantastic, but to avoid a spoil alerts ... All of this pain is alleviated by life-saving rusks, milktart (custard flan) and koeksisters (Chinese bow ties) and lots of koffie (coffee). with all the drama a desperate Annica begs the help of a sangoma in her attempt to save everybody. There is warmth, lots of action, mysterious forces, the impact of history, and great humor. The earthy characters are resourceful and find themselves outside their usual comfort zones.
